TV shopping

私は、日本にいたときからテレビショッピングが好きです。夜中にテレビでやってると、特に健康器具、すぐ買っちゃうのですね。必ず、１週間、長くて１か月ほど使用すると、不要になります。ので、実家に送ったり、友達に送ったりしています。こちらでも盛んにテレビショッピングがやってます。アメリカのチャンネルは、５０くらいあるので、そのうち１つのチャネルではテレビショッピングをやってます。で、ほしくなって電話するわけですが、英語で電話するのはとっても難しいです。よく聞き取れなくて、とりあえず、Yesと答えると買えるわけですが、同じものが２個届いたりします・・・。なぜ・・・。

I love TV shopping and I used to use it when I was in Japan. I always buy something such as health appliances when a TV shopping program is on the air. As it always eliminates the need for the health appliances from me within one week or one month at the longest, the health appliances will be sent to my mother or my friends.
In US, a TV shopping program is frequently on the air. As there are about 50 channels in US, a TV shopping program is broadcasted at least one of the channels. When I see a TV shopping program and come to want some health appliances or so, I do call at once. But it is difficult for me to call in English. As I can’t fully catch native English, temporarily, I say “Yes” when she asks me something. I don’t know the reason, but two same products are sometimes delivered to me...

ID

アメリカでは、どこにいってもIDの提示を求められます。レストランでお酒を頼むとき、薬局でお酒やたばこを買うとき、ビルに入るとき、プールバーに入るとき、洋服を買うとき、などなど。運転免許を持ってないときは、常にパスポートを持っていないといけなくてとても不便でしたけど、運転免許を取ってからはとても便利になりました。これだけでも運転免許を取ってよかった～。車はやっぱり全然運転していませんけど・・・。

Someone often asks me to show my ID in US, for example, when I drink alcohol in a restaurant, when I buy alcohol or tobacco at a drugstore, when I enter a building or a pool bar and when I buy clothes. When I didn’t have my driver’s license, it was necessary for me to have my passport at any time with me and it was very inconvenient. But now I have my driver’s license, so it is very convenient. But now, as I have my driver’s license, it is very convenient. In the sense that I was relieved from taking my passport at any time with me, my driver’s license is worthwhile. However, I don’t drive in DC at all…

Garbage bag

アメリカのゴミ袋は、袋の上に紐が付いていて、引っ張ると、袋の口が閉まるようになっています。初めてゴミ袋を使ったときは、あまりの便利さに超感激しました！日本のゴミ袋もこうなってればいいのに・・・。大きさは、日本と同じく４５リットルくらいのもあります。お土産で買って帰ろうかと思ってしまいますけど、荷物になりますね。

A garbage bag in US has strings on the top of the bag and if I pull the strings, I can tie bag at the top. I was very impressed because it was very very convenient. I wish a garbage bag in Japan is the same as this. There is a garbage bag which has a same size, for example 45 liter in Japan. I would like to bring a garbage bag to Japan, but it is too much to carry, I think.

I love mango

アメリカで安いと思ったのが電気製品とフルーツです。私は毎朝フルーツを食べているのだけれど、スーパーにはめったに行かれないので、１回にすごい量のフルーツをまとめ買いします。今は、ブドウ、リンゴ、桃、なし、イチゴ、パパイヤ、マンゴ、スイカ、バナナ、プラム、ブルーベリーなどが売っています。私は、フルーツ全般になんでも好きですけど、写真のマンゴは、９個で８ドルです。１つ１００円くらいなので、安いですね。こんなに買ったので、ご近所におすそ分けしますけど。

I suppose electric products and fruits are cheap in US. Though I eat fruits every morning, I can’t go to a supermarket so often because I don’t have a car. So, when I go to a supermarket, I always buy many fruits. In a supermarket, there are grapes, apples, peaches, strawberries, papayas, mangos, water melons, bananas, plums and blueberries in this season. I like all kinds of fruits. The mangos in the picture are only $8 for nine. I think 100 yen for one is very cheap. As I bought so many mangos, I share them with my friends.

Golf and tennis

毎週水曜日にH先生にゴルフとテニスを教えて頂いています。H先生は、３９歳まで特許庁でお勤めになり、その後、アメリカに渡って弁護士になり、今年で２６年目だそうです。毎月１回、セミナーを開催されていることもあって、日本人トレイニーの中ではものすごく有名な先生です。前に一度お食事を一緒にした際に、テニスとゴルフの話になり、教えて頂くことになりました。H先生は、特許庁を辞めてアメリカに渡ったとき、特許で食べていくかテニスのプロになるか本気で悩んだというくらいのテニスの腕前です。レッスンは、全部で８人くらいですが、かなりハードです。H先生は、超人的な体力の持主です。

I take lessons of golf and tennis by Mr.H every Wednesday. Mr.H had worked for JPO (Japan Patent Office) until the age of 39. After that, he came to US and became an Attorney at Law. 26 years have passed since he came to the states. I am sure he is the most well-known specialist among Japanese trainees because he has a seminar every month.
When I had dinner with Mr. H, we talked about tennis and golf. Then I began to take his lessons every Wednesday. When Mr. H resigned JPO, he considered whether he made his living in patent or in tennis. So his tennis skill is terrific. About eight persons take the lessons which are very hard. I am convinced Mr. Hattori has superhuman strength.

BBQ in Alan’s house

パートナのアランがＢＢＱに招待してくれたので、Hさんご夫妻と行ってきました。おうちは、ジョージタウンにあります。ジョージタウンはＤＣの中で一番栄えている場所です。H社の知財の方が何人かいらっしゃっていていました。そのうちの部長さんは、女性の方で、３日滞在して帰るそうです。２ヶ月に１回の割合で、出張していらっしゃるとのことでした。とてもハードな生活です。
ＢＢＱというと、ホットドックやお肉ですけど、この日は特大のサーモンでした。他にもいろいろな食べ物が用意してあって、アランはとっても料理上手でした。楽しかったです。

Alan who is a partner in Sughrue invited me to BBQ, so I went to his house with Mr. and Mrs. H. His house is in Georgetown. Georgetown is the most prosperous place in DC. Some of trainees from Hitachi were also invited to the BBQ. The manager of H who is a women will return to Japan after three days. She takes oversea business trips every two month. I think it is a very tough schedule.
BBQ is always hotdog or beef, but this day’s food was a huge salmon. There were many kind of foods on the table. I think Alan is a very good cook. I had a wonderful time.

Outlets

マンハッタンから車で２時間弱くらいのところにあるウッドベリーコモン・アウトレットに行ってきました。シャネル、グッチ、プラダ、アルマーニなど、２２０のブランドがお店を出しているそうです。超広大な規模でした。
さて、アウトレットですけど、私の足のサイズや体の大きさにぴったりのものが多いです。やっぱり、私のサイズはアメリカでもレアなんですね（笑）。おかげで、アウトレットに流れてくる洋服や靴が多くて、私にとっては、アウトレットは買い物天国です。一緒に行った友達は、サイズがなくて買えないものが多いと嘆いていましたけど。

I went to Woodbury Common Outlets where it is less than two hours drive from Manhattan. I heard there are 220 shops which are Chanel, Gucci, Prada, and Armani and so on. It was really huge.
Anyway, in outlets, most of clothes and shoes fit my size.. I think there is few people who has my size in US as well as Japan. So, there are many clothes and shoes which are sent to Outlet from proper shops, and the outlets are shopping paradises for me. Although my friend who went there with me bemoaned that she couldn’t buy clothes and shoes because her size is popular.
