Bank of America

Ｉさんに不足金を支払ってもらったので、急いで口座をしめないといけません。とりあえず、口座を下ろす前に、明細をみましたらびっくり。マイナスのバランスになったのは今月になってからのようですが、$35の延滞金が８回もチャージされていました。不足金$600のうち、$280は延滞金だなんて・・・。しかし、１００％の延滞金など、この世の中にこんな高利の金貸しがいるなんて・・・。シティバンクにはあと１３ドル残ってるんですけど（笑）、口座閉じた方がいいかな、と本気で悩むのでした。

Since he paid my lacking money, I have to close my account as soon as possible. In the meantime, I checked my balance, and I was surprised… Because, the lacking money is accrued after this month, but I paid back money of $35 eight times. Among lacking money S600, $280 is back money. However I cannot believe there is 100% interest rate in the world… I have $13 at City Bank, but I wonder whether or not I should close my account of City Bank.

Kitchen Sink

菊名のマンションに引っ越しして最初に気づいたのは、台所が低い。流し台が本当に低くて、日本にいたころは気づかなかったけど、アメリカの流し台は高かったんだなぁとつくづく実感。日本に帰ってきたら、流し台が低くて洗い物とかお料理が大変。ただでさえ、日本に帰ってくるときの飛行機のせいで、腰の調子が悪いのに。日本に帰ってきたら、単に暮らしているだけで、こんなにも腰に負担がかかっているのね、ということがわかり、ますますＤＣが恋しくなるのでした。

When I moved to a new apartment in Kikuna after returnig to Japan, I found a kitchen sink was installed lower in Japan than in the US. When I was in Japan before my staying in the US, I didn't know that. But I deeply feel that a sink in the US is installed much higher than in Japan. After returning to Japan, I have troubles to wash dishes or cook. I feel pain for my back already because of the plane returning to Japan. I have strained my back, therefore, I miss DC so much.

Debit card

デビットカードは、その都度、チェッキングアカウントから、カードを使用する度に、現金が引き落とされます。で、その都度、引き落とされてると思っていました。ところが、お店によっては、その瞬間に引き落としをしないで、何日かペンディングになる場合があるようなのです。で、ハワイで、チェッキングアカウントの残額を確認して、ほぼ０ドルになるまで、デビットカードを使用してきました（苦笑）。バンカメのアカウントはハワイでクローズしようと思ってたのですけど、なんとハワイにはバンカメがありませんでした。で、ついでに、シティバンクもありませんでした・・・。で、時差なんかの関係でバンカメにうまく電話ができなかったので、とりあえず、口座を空にしてしまおうと、使用したわけです。で、日本に帰って１週間くらいしたら、Iさんから、バンカメのチェッキングアカウントが＄４５０ドルくらい不足している、という請求書が届いたとメールが来ました・・・。で、しょうがないので、支払をして下さいと頼みました。で岩瀬さんがジャニスとバンカメに行ってもらって支払ってもらいました。なんと、＄６００ドルくらいになってたようです。ただし、本人でないと、アカウントをクローズすることができない、ということで、私、バンカメに電話しないといけません。うう、面倒くさいよう。

When I use a debit card, basically, the cash I used is withdrawn from my checking account on the same day. I thought the cash is withdrawn immediately. However, for some stores, the cash is not withdrawn on the same day, and withdrawn in a couple of days later. I checked my checking account in an internet, and spent money until my amount of balance of my checking account became close to zero. Although I was going to close my account of Bank of America, there is no Bank of America in Honolulu…Incidentally; there is no City Bank in Honolulu. Since I could not call Bank of America because there is a time difference between Honolulu and Washington DC, for the time being, I was going to make my checking account empty.
About one week after returning to Japan, Mr. Iwase sent me e-mail that he received a bill from Bank of America and the bill said that my checking account is lacking $450. I was surprised but there was nothing else I could do, so I asked him to pay the lacking money. The lacking money was increasing, and he should have paid about $600. However, only I myself can close my account, so I have to call Bank of America. What a bother…

Return to Japan

５月１日に無事に日本に到着しました。新しいマンションで、６月以降にしかインターネットが使えないし、引っ越しやらなにやらでばたばたしてブログを更新してませんけれど、ワシントン便り、きっちり終わらせる予定です。帰国後のブログは別途立ち上げようかなと思ってます。ハワイからの飛行機で腰痛が悪化し、引っ越し（いまだに片付いていないけど・・・）でさらに腰痛が悪化してますが、日本にいるので大丈夫かな、などと思っています。しばらくは、長らく会っていない友達みんなに会いたいなと思っています。

I returned to Japan safely. I could not use the internet in my new apartment for long time, and had to clean up my new apartment, so I was busy. Therefore I couldn’t update my blog, but I will complete it for sure. I will start another blog which I will write after returning to Japan. The airplane from Hawaii made my back worse. And the moving made my back worse (even though my new apartment hasn’t been cleaned up yet…). However I think I will be alright, because I am in Japan. I would like to see many friends who I haven’t seen for long time.

Only 11000 yen

さて、私はこちらで虫歯になって歯医者に行って神経を抜いて４０万ほど払ったわけですが、日本で保険の申請をすると、支払った額の７割が国民健康保険で返ってくるとのこと。さっそく、前回帰ったときに、２０００ドル分の申請をしました。で、帰ってきた金額がなんと11000円。日本で治療したら16500円くらいなので、その７割が11000円だそう。え・・・そんな。アメリカの歯医者はほんと高い。アメリカで歯医者に行ってはいけませんね。

Well, I do remember I paid $4,000 for a dentist, because I had a nerve extracted when I got a cavity. I came to know if I applied for a national insurance, 70% of my bill would be returned. Then, when I returned to Tokyo temporary, I applied for the national insurance about $2,000. BUT, ONLY $110 was returned to me... If I have a nerve extracted in Japan, it costs \16,500, and the 70% of it is \11,000... Oh, my god! The dentist treatment is really expensive in the US, so I swear I never go to a dentist in the US again!

Rio’s

リオデジャネイロで行ったシュラスコのおいしいレストランがなんとＮＹにもあるということで行ってきました。１人前５０ドル。カイピリーニャはなんと目の前でライムなんかを潰して作ってくれます。リオと比べると、お店の規模が小さいのと、リオほどにぎわっていなかったのもあったけど、なんだか懐かしい感じがしました。少しずつ、って言ってるんだけど、結構大きく切られちゃって、すごいいっぱいの肉を食べた気が・・・。あたしってば、ここんところ、ほんと肉づくし・・・。

I heard that there was a restaurant in NY, which was a branch of the restaurant we went in Rio and whose Brazilian BBQ was so tasty. Therefore, we went there. It cost $50 per person. I was very happy because they made Caipirinha just in front of me by using fresh lime. Compared with that in Rio, the restaurant was smaller, and not
so crowded than that in Rio. But the restaurant brought me back some memories. Although I requested the staff to serve me a little, they gave me a large cut of every meat. So I ate too much again... Anyway, recently, I have eaten a lot of meat almost every day!!!

The Empire State Building

やっぱりＮＹに来たら、一度は登らないとということで、エンパイアステートビルに登ってきました。８６階の展望台は、外に出ることができます。１８ドル。なんとその上にも行くことができて、１０２階の展望台は室内のみで、追加で１５ドル。さらに、エンパイアステートビルディングの前には、特急で展望台まで行けるチケットが売ってて、５０ドル近くしてました。時間を金で買うのね・・・。展望台に上ったのは、７時半ごろ。ちょうど夕焼けが見られてとても美しかったです。で、１０２階の展望台に上る頃には日がすっかり落ちて夜景まで見られました。大満足かな。

When one goes to NY, everybody should go up the Empire State Building once. So did I..The 86th floor observatory, we can go outside. It costs $18. We can go up further to the upper floor, the 102th floor observatory, we cannot go outside and the additional fee is $15. The special ticket which made us go to the observatory very quickly were sold in front of the Empire State Building and it cost $50. We can buy time by money... We went to the observatory around 7:30pm, so we could see the sunset, and it was very very beautiful. And when we went to the 102th floor observatory, the sun went down and we could see a night view. I was very satisfied with that.

Sightseeing in NYC

今までは、ＮＹに来て、ほぼ買い物しかしていなかったので、今回は買い物なしの、完全観光旅行。到着してからアートギャラリーを１０か所ほど回りました。ＮＹにはいっぱいギャラリーがあるのですね・・・。って言っても私、アートの才能がないので、どの作品がよいかなどはわかりませんけど（笑）。それからGrand zeroにも行きました。まだ新しいビルの工事中です。ここであの大惨劇が起きたのか？と思うほど、何事もなかったように淡々とビル工事が進んでいる感じです。震災後に初めて神戸に行ったときと同じく、なんとも言えない気分でした。写真は、Grand zeroの完成図。

So far, when I came to NY, all I had done is shopping. So, this time, I will do sightseeing, not shopping. After arriving at NY, I went to about 10 art galleries. I did not know there were so many art galleries in NY. However, I have no talent for art, so I do not know which art is best. I went to Grand zero. New building was still under construction. I cannot believe the tragedy really occurred here, and men were working as if nothing had happened. I was deeply concerned with this scene as well as when I went to Kobe first after 1995 Kobe earthquake.

Last trip??

土日に、最後にＮＹＣに行ってこようと、ＮＹに来て、そしてなぜかブログを書いています、でも更新してない・・（最近、超さぼってました・・・）。友達とご飯のはずだったんだけど、友達から連絡が入らず、ホテルで一人お腹を空かせながらブログを書いてます（笑）。夜１１時から、他の友達と会う予定なので、それまで我慢。アメリカ生活には慣れたけど、なんとなく、一人で出かけて飲んで食べる勇気がでません。早く友達来ないかな・・・。

I planned to go to NY from Friday thru Sunday. Now I am in NY and I am writing my blog (but not updating). (I have not updated my blog recently...) Despite the promise to to have dinner with my friends, there is no call for me. So I am waiting for their call and writing my blog with my starving... I have a plan to see another friend at 11:00 pm, so I cannot eat by 11:00pm. I do never have the courage to go out for dinner alone. I hope my friend would come and see me soon.

Kotobuki

ＤＣ生活も残り１週間余りとなり、日本人トレイニーの人達と少人数でしっぽり、ということで飲みました。Kotobukiという日本食レストランに行きました。この辺では、まあおいしいというレストランです。ブリかまや、イカの塩辛や、刺身やお寿司や、いろいろ食べました。が、なんと言っても日本酒です。この日は、ジャニスにご飯を奢る会だったわけですが、彼女の大好きな久保田の万寿、720ｍ、なんと１本125ドル。。。日本で買うと、１升７０００円くらいみたいですねぇ・・・４倍以上します。運悪く（運よく）万寿が１本しかなかったので、２本目からは残念ながら他のお酒に。ジャニスはじゃんじゃん飲むので（笑）。結構高かったけれど、でもおいしかったからよし、です。

I have only about one week left before I leave DC, so we had a cozy get together with some Japanese trainees. We went to Kotobuki which was a Japanese restaurant. The level (price and taste) is so so around Ballston. we ate a broiled head of Buri with salt, Shiokara of calamari, Sashimi and Sushi and so on. But the main purpose was Nihonshu. We were going to pay for Janice, and she loves manju of Kubota. One bottle of manju (720 ml) costs S125. If we buy this in Japan, we can buy $70 per one shou (one shou is 1800ml). In DC, it costs four times as in Japan! Unfortunately for Janice, and fortunately for us, the restaurant only had one manju, after drinking one mangu, we drank other sake. Because Janice was really strong for alcohol, it was expensive but it was very fun.

RAY’S THE STEAKS

ＤＣで、安くておいしいステーキのお店として、超人気のRoy’s stakeに行ってきました。ということで、また肉です（笑）。もちろん、フィレ肉を頼んだけれど、トリフソースってので頼みました。フィレ肉の上に結構でかいフォアグラが乗っていて、30-40ドルくらいかな。前菜で、クラムチャウダー、ほたてのソテー、サーモンなんかを食べましたけど、これがおいしい。ＤＣではおいしいシーフードをなかなか食べられませんが、ここのシーフードはイケます。で、フィレ肉もおいしかったけど、　　のが味は上かもしれません。でもフォアグラ乗ってたからな、また食べたいな・・。４人でワイン２本も飲んで、いっぱい頼みましたけど、１人８０ドルくらいでした。日本より食事は安いと思います。

We went to Roy’s Steak which was the best tasty steak restaurant in DC and very famous restaurant. Well, I ate meat again ^^. Of course, I ordered fillet steak but this time it was a fillet with truffle sauce. The steak was served with a big foie gras and it cost $30-S40. And we ate clam chowder, saute of escallops, and salmon as appetizer, they were soooooo delicious. The seafood in this restaurant was really good.
Although the fillet was very delicious, meat of the Capital Grille might be more delicious than Roy’s steak. However, I like foie gras very much, so I do want to eat it again. We, four persons, drank two bottles of wine, and ate many dishes, but it cost about $80 a person. Restaurants in DC are cheaper than those in Tokyo.

アメリカに来て、ちゃんとステーキを食べてないな・・・と言ったら、それはダメだー、ステーキを食べないとダメだー、という話になって、ステーキを食べに行きました。ステーキは、１人前42-45ドル。ＤＣ界隈では、中高級くらいかな・・・。ワイン少しとサイドオーダを入れて75ドルくらいだったかと。私が一番好きなのは、フィレ肉なので、フィレ肉を食べましたけど、おいしかったです。アメリカのお肉も結構おいしいかも。
As I told some of my friends that I have never eaten a steak dinner, they said it was too bad, and you should eat American steak. Then we went to have a steak dinner. The price is $42-S45 per one steak; it was a little expensive in DC. Since we ordered a bottle of wine and side dishes, we paid about $75 per person. My most favorite is fillet steak, so I ate it. It was very tasty. I thought American beef was good!

Home party

Ｊａｙがご招待してくれたので、何人かの日本人トレイニーとＪａｙのお家に遊びに行ってきました。想像通り、とてもとても大きなりっぱな家でした。中に入ると、またこれが別荘のモデルルームに来たみたいでした。おうちの中を案内してもらいましたけれど、２階は、子どもたちのお部屋、寝室などがありました。お風呂ひとつが、６畳くらいの大きさです。１階は、どこまで続くかと思われる超広いリビングダイニングです。で、地下は、卓球台とかでっかいテレビとかが置いてあって、完全にアミューズメントプレイスでした。物置小屋だと言っていた１室に私、本気で住みたいと思いました。犬が２匹いて、すごくすごく可愛かったです。とても賢くおとなしい犬でした。庭には、電気の檻が張ってあるそうで、犬たちは広い広いお庭を駆け回っていました。Ｊａｙの奥さんのケティは、とってもかわいらしい人で、Ｊａｙとの馴れ初めなんかを教えてくれました。そして、とってもお料理が上手。すっごく美味しかったです。ところで、優菜ちゃんはこんなに大きくなりました！

As Mr. J invited us to his house, we, several Japanese trainees went to Mr. J’s house. As I had imagined, it was a huge house. When I went inside of his house, it was like a model rooms of a resort villa. He and his wife showed us all rooms, and there were children rooms and bed room. For example, his bath room is as the same size as the same size as a Japanese six-mat room. The first floor was sooooo big living dining room. And a basement room was very large amusement place... There was one room in the basement, and he said this was a lumber room, but I did want to stay there. There was an electrical fence which was not visible, so dogs run around the very large garden. Mr. J’s wife is Mrs. K, and she is really nice cute lady. She told me about first meeting with Mr. J. She is also a very good cook, so the dinner was really delicious.

Kenwood

ＤＣからＪａｙのお家にいくまでの間にケンウッドという桜の名所があるというので行ってきました。行ってみたらびっくり、ＤＣのポトマックより美しい感じ。で、ポトマックよりは、混雑していませんでした。住宅街に突然桜並木が登場する感じで、近所の人達にはとてもよい場所と思います。その後、更にもう１か所、花見に行きましたけど、そちらは、とても空いていてよかったですけれど、名前を忘れました・・・。

There was a major cherry blossom-viewing spot on the way from DC to J’s house, so we went there. When we arrived there, we were surprised. The cherry blossoms were much more beautiful than those along the Potomac. Further, it was not so crowded as Potomac. There were some avenues lined with a lot of cherry blossoms in a residential area. I think it is a special area for neighbors who live around there, because they can see and enjoy cherry blossoms without going to other places. After that, I visited another area, and it was very nice place because there was few people. But, unfortunately, I cannot remember its name...

さて、桜の季節です。ＤＣの最も桜がきれいでにぎわっている場所は、ワシントンモニュメントの周りですかね・・すごい人です。土曜日に車で少し周りを見ましたら、結構キレイでした。でも、車では行かれないので、日曜日に電車で行きました。若干行くのが遅かったので、葉桜が始まってしまってましたけど。日本でも桜のまっ盛り（ブログを更新するころには終わっちゃってるかな・・）だと思いますけど。ＤＣでは、外でお酒を飲むことが禁止されているとかで、日本人のように、ござを広げて、お弁当を食べつつ、日本酒を飲む、みたいな風景はなしです。みんなのんびり歩きながら桜を観賞している感じ。こっちの方がまっとうな気がします（笑）。

It is the cherry blossoms season. The place where everybody goes to see cherry blossom
is around the Washington Monument. There are so many people there. When I went and saw around there on last Saturday by car, it was quite beautiful. However, this time, we could not go there because of the so crowded people, I went there by train. It was a little late for enjoying cherry blossom, so some cherry blossoms had fallen and fresh green leaves were growing. It was a top season of cherry blossoms in Japan (But the season might pass away when I would update my blog...) As drinking alcohol open-air is banned in DC, there is no scene that many people spread a mat
and drink "Sake" with "Obento" like in Japan. Everybody walks slowly and enjoys seeing cherry blossoms. I feel it is more natural than Japan.

Chocolate truffles

大量のチョコレートトリフを作りました。なんと使ったチョコは2キロ以上。大きな籠に３ばい分（笑）。お世話になって皆様に感謝のチョコをくばります。ブラックのチョコレートは、カカオマスの割合が高いのを使用すれば、甘さを控えることができるのだけど、ホワイトチョコはできず・・・なので、ホワイトチョコは超甘くなってしまいました。ブランデーとかチョコレートのリキュールとかもどばどば入れたかったのだけど、お酒を飲めない人にもあげるので、そこそこにしました。甘さ控え目のチョコレートはアメリカ人に受け付けられるのか？？と思っていましたけど、マギンさんの事務所に持って行ってら、ジョセフからメールが来て、mikaのハンドメイドだったら、レシピを教えてくれないかと、聞かれました！ということは、受け入れられたのかな・・・。レシピといっても、チョコに生クーリムを入れて溶かして、粗熱が取れたらお酒を入れて、冷凍庫で固まらせて、コーティングしておしまい、分量は各適当、って感じなんですけど・・・（笑）。

I cooked a lot of chocolate truffles. I used more than four pounds chocolate. The truffles are three baskets   As Jay invited me to his house, I am going to bring the truffles. And other truffles are as a token of gratitude for they working with me. Further, other truffles are for some of Japanese trainees, because they were taking care of me very much. Although I can cook black chocolate that is not too sweet, if I use dark chocolate which has high content rate of cacao, but I cannot cook white chocolate that is not too sweet. So, white chocolate truffles were so sweet…Actually, I wanted to put a lot of brandy and chocolate liquor, some people who I was going to give my handmade chocolate cannot drink alcohol, so, I put some, not a lot. I wonder if American people do not like the chocolate which is not so sweet. However, after bringing chocolate truffles to McGinn Office, Joseph sent me e-mail and asked that if the chocolate truffles were Mika’s handmade, could you tell me the recipe, because a few people asked him to ask me a recipe. It means American people like not so sweet chocolate. Actually, I don’t have an accurate recipe…I just melt some chocolate with heavy cream, remove from the heat, put some brandy and/or chocolate liquor, put it in a freezer, and make bowls, and courting with chocolate. Then, amount of chocolate, heavy cream and brandy are indeterminate…

Work?? or walk??

さて、私の発音の良さはどのくらいかというと、スターバックスでコーヒー下さいと言って通じない程、なんですけれど（笑）、work（働く）とwalk（歩く）がちゃんと発音できてません。ちなみに、スターバックスでコーヒー以外に私が何を注文すると思ってるのかしら、と自分の発音の悪さには落ち込まずに、相手のせいにしてます。で、workなんですけど、前にJayにＤＣに来て何が一番楽しい？と聞かれて、（法律事務所で）働いていること！って答えるわけですが、へ～、どの辺を？などという答えが返ってくるわけです。で、よくよく話すと、私歩くのが好き、って聞こえちゃってるわけです。で、昨日も、今日何してたの？って聞かれたので、家で働いてた、って答えたら、なんで？どうやって？などと聞かれて、いや仕事が終わらないから、などと答えていたわけですけど、なんか話がかみ合わないと思ったら、これまた、家で歩いていた、と聞こえちゃってたわけですねぇ。自分でも相当ヤバイと思いますけど。。。て言ってる場合ではなくて、発音直さねば・・・。

Let me explain my English pronunciation level. When I order, saying “Coffee please!” in Starbucks, they usually ask me “What do you want, ma'am?”, this is my level…I also cannot pronounce "work" and "walk" properly.. FYI, when a person in Starbucks cannot understand me, I always don’t get depressed about my pronunciation. Because I think “What should I do except ordering coffee in Starbucks?”, and “You should understand me!”
Regarding “work”, Jay asked me what was the most enjoyable thing in DC, before, then I answered “I love working (in the law firm)!”. Then he asked me again, “where do you walk? Around Sughrue??”. I thought it was strange question, so I realized he mishear my “work” for “walk”…That means I said to him “I love walking”.
Yesterday, my friend asked me “what did you do today?”, then I answered “I was working at my apartment.”, then my friend said “How did you walk here? Why?”. Then I answered “Because I didn’t finish my work yet.”. After a little while, I realized he misheard my “working” for “walking”… That means I said to my friend “I was walking at home.” I think it is too bad. I should correct my pronunciation…

DC tour

さて、ＤＣに来て１０か月くらいになりますけど、私、今だにＤＣ観光をまともにしていません。スミソニアンも１つしか見に行っていません。それはいけない、ということで、今日ＤＣ観光に行ってきました。ご想像通り、渡辺さんが連れて行ってくれました。今日は、カイトフェスティバルとかで、モールでは、大量の凧が上がっていました。小雨の中・・・。ワシントンモニュメントに登りたかったのですけど、朝７時半に行かないと整理券がゲットできないらしく、ちょっと難しいです。ネットでも予約できますが、６月まで一杯です。ホワイトハウスの中も観覧できるみたいですが、知り合いは、２ヶ月以上前に申込してまだ待っている状態みたいです。ということで、私は入れません・・。でもいろいろ見れて楽しかったです。National Cathedraは、ステンドガラスがとってもきれいでした。

I have been here in DC for ten months, but I have not done a sightseeing in DC yet. I visited the Smithsonian museums just once. As I thought it was no good, I went to do sightseeing in DC on Saturday. As you can easily image, Watanabe-san took my friend and me there for a sightseeing in DC. Today was the Kite Festival, so there were so many kites in the sky around the Mall. Unfortunately it was misting. I wanted to go up to the top of the Washington monument, but we couldn’t see the views from the top of the Wasington monument. This is because we could not get tickets due to our failure in getting there by 7:30 am. A ticket can be got thru an internet, but all the tickets are already booked by June! And we can also see an inside of the White House, but one of my friends is waiting for more than two months. So, I could not enter the White House.
However I did very enjoy doing sightseeing in DC today. Especially, the stained glasses in National Cathedra were very beautiful.

Fan

アメリカのアパートには、換気扇がない！って思ってとても不便していました。が、最近は慣れてしまって、お料理の香り満載の中でお料理してました。で、ちょっと肉とかトーストを焼いて焦げると、火災報知機がピーピーと、ものすごい音で鳴っていました。ちなみに、火災報知機は、最初超びびってアパートに言いに行ったら、ほっとけばよい、と言われました・・・（笑）。で、換気扇ですが、ちゃんと付いてました。なんと電子レンジに換気扇のボタンが付いてるんです。そんなのわかんない、、、で、結構強力。パワーも切り替えられて、電気とかもついていて、こっちの備付の電子レンジは多機能？です。

Apartments in the US were inconvenient, I thought, because there were no fans. However, recently I have got used to it, so I usually cook in the environment where there is a lot of smell of cooking food. So, if meat gets burned a little, or a toast burns brown, a fire alarm in my apartment rings with very loud noise. FYI, when the fire alarm rang first time, I was very surprised and went downstairs and asked what I should do. A super said I should let it be...
BTW, there is a fan in my apartment! There is a button of a fan on a microwave. It is difficult to find.... The fan is powerful and I can control a power level. There is also a light to light heaters. A microwave in the US has multiple functions.

Typo

アメリカで生活してかれこれ９か月くらいになるので、さすがに携帯メール（テキスト）を打つのが早くなりました。もちろん英語です。日本でもそうですが、便利なので一日に何通も友達なんかとテキストを交換しますけど、よくよく見ると、誤記が多いですねぇ・・・日本での携帯メールでも私誤記が多いんですけど、言語が違っても、誤記が多いのは同じなのね・・・・。ちなみに結構アメリカ人も誤記があります。アメリカ人は誤記があっても読めるだろうけど、私は誤記があると結構読むのに苦労します（苦笑）。英語のテキストメールに慣れてしまって、１０月に帰ったとき、日本語の携帯メールがすごく打ちにくかったです。帰ったら結構苦労しそう・・・。

I have been living in the US for nine months, so I am now able to send English text easily from my cell phone. I exchange text with my friend very often every day because of convenience, as well as I was in Japan. But, I realized that my texts have many typos… I also sometimes make typo when I use my cell phone in Japan. Although the language is different, it is the same that I make typo... Incidentally, my American friends also sometimes make typos. Native can read it easily, if text includes typo, but it takes a little trouble for me to read the text including typo. BTW, I get friendlier with an English text, it was a little hard for me to text in Japanese when I returned to Tokyo last October. I suppose I have difficulty texting in Japanese when I return to Japan.

CAFC

SughrueのアトーニにＣＡＦＣツアーに連れて行ってもらいました。JudgeのRichard Linnにお話しをお伺いして、３つあるコートルームのうちの中くらいの大きさの部屋に案内して頂きました。なんと裁判官席に座るのＯＫということで、座らせてもらいました！裁判官のお仕事は、読むか書くだそうです。１月１２～２０件の案件を処理するらしく、１件について読まなくてはいけない資料は膨大な量だそうです。裁判は通常３人で行われますが、裁判が始める前に彼らは決して話をしないそうです。裁判が終わって初めて意見交換するそうです。余計な先入観を持たないように。で、意見は、最も若い裁判官から発表するそうです。一番偉い人が先に意見を言ってしまうと、反対意見は言いにくいですものね。

An attorney of Sughrue took us (trainees) to the CAFC tour. We met Judge Richard Linn and talked to him, then he led us to a court room which is a middle size of the three court rooms in CAFC. The judge allowed us to sit on the judge’s chair, so we could sit on the chair! I felt as if I were a judge! The work of judge is reading and writing, he explained his work to us. The CAFC handles 12 to 20 cases in a month, and he should read many many documents for one case. A trial is usually handled by three judges, but they never talk to each other before starting a trial. Then they have the first discussion after trial in order not to have preconceptions. And the youngest judge should show his opinion first. The reason is that if the senior judge shows his opinion first, the youngest judge cannot show his opposite opinion.

A big farewell party

３月、４月、５月には、多くの研修生が日本に帰ります。それで３月２５日に、この春帰国される総勢９人の研修生のための送別会がありました。ＤＣには、こんなに沢山の日本人がいるんだなぁ、という感じで、３０人以上の人が集まってお食事をしました。半分くらいは研修生ですが、その他、ＤＣの法律事務所で弁護士や技術者として働いている人達も沢山います。研修生の研修期間は、２年の人もいれば半年の人もいます。東京から来たのに、違う都市に戻られる方もいます。大抵の人は、私と同じで日本に帰ってからおうちを探すようです。今まではずっと送り出す側でしたけど、送られる方になちゃいました・・・。さて、響のみんなは、日本に帰ったら（壮大な？）歓迎会をしてくれるのかな（笑）

Many trainees will return to Japan in March, April and May. A big farewell party for nine people who will return to Japan this spring was held on March 25th. I realized there are such many Japanese in DC. More than 30 Japanese gathered to the restaurant to have dinner. Half of them are trainees, but others are attorneys or technical person working at a law firm in DC and so on. Training period are various, some of them are two years, or some of them are six months. City where they return is also various. For example, a person who came from Tokyo will return to other city. Most of people as well as me will look for their apartment after returning to Japan. I have given many trainees a send-off so far, but finally, I am given a send-off by other people.
Well, when I return to Japan, will everyone in Hibiki have a BIG welcome party for me???

Customs duty

さてさて、引っ越しの準備をしないといけません。ところで。靴を持ち込むと関税がかかるらしいのですが、それがびっくし。革靴は、１足４３００円か見積金額の３０％のいずれか高い方らしい・・・。なので、１０ドルくらいの靴を買って喜んでいたわけですが、１０ドルでも４３００円かかるのですね・・・。でも、４３００円払っても日本じゃ靴がなかなかないからな・・・と悩むのでした。

I should prepare moving to Tokyo. BTW, I was sooo surprised that if I bring back leather shoes to Japan, I have to pay customs duties. But the customs duty of one leather shoes is one of a higher price of 30% of an estimated price or 4300yen.… Therefore, if I buy shoes for $10, I still have to pay 4300yen… However, I might not be able to buy shoes with 4300yen in Japan, so I am very troubled… Help me…

Thank-you dinner

さて、ワシントンＤＣ滞在中には、ほんとうにたくさんの人にお世話になりました。渡辺さんとか・・・ということで、土日に、お世話になって人達を招待して、ご飯を食べてもらうことにしました。２日で１５人前の料理を作りました。渡辺さんにＨマートに連れてってもらって、大量の食糧を買い込みました。総額＄５００以上。日本酒一升とか、ビール４ケースとか、ワイン６本とか、お肉２キロ×４とか（苦笑）。今回のテーマは、肉！ということで、アメリカでしか買えないようなすごい量の肉を買っちゃいました。ローストビーフ、ビーフシチュー、スペアリブのＢＢＱ、ひつまぶし、などなど。ビーフシチューは、１週間前からデミグラスソースを作ったし、土曜と日曜は、各６、７時間かかってお料理しました。私ってばほんとにお料理好きね・・・ローストビーフは、土曜日しっぱいしちゃって、ローストポークみたいになっちゃったけど（笑）、日曜日のローストビーフは上手にできました。皆様にほんの少しでもお礼の気持ちが伝われば幸せです。

Well, a lot of people have taken care of me during my stay in DC. For example,
Watanabe-san... Therefore, I decided to invite a lot of my friends who have taken care of me in DC, and served them a thank-you dinner. I cooked dishes for about 15 people. Watanabe-san took me to the supermarket, and I bought a lot of food. It cost more than $500… I bought one big bottle of Sake, four cases of beer, six bottles of wine, 12 pounds of beef and 8 pounds of pork, etc…. The main dish of the thank-you dinner was meat! Therefore I bought really a lot of meat. I am allowed to buy such amount of meat only in the US, because if I bought same amount of meat in Tokyo, it would be sooooo expensive.. I cooked a large amount of roast beef, beef stew, sparerib of BBQ and Hitumabusi (Nagoya food). I had been preparing demiglace sauce for beef stew for one week, and I cooked six or seven hours each Saturday and Sunday.. I found I really like to cook… I found I really liked to cook... Although I failed in cooking a roast beef on Saturday (it seemed a roast pork… too cooked), I could cook a roast beef much much
better on Sunday. I am very happy if they could feel my gratitude even a little.

St. Patrick's Day

３月１７日は、St. Patrick's Day（聖パトリックの日）でした。アイルランドの祝日で、アイルランドにキリスト教を広めた聖人聖パトリックの命日だそうです。この日は、みんな何か緑の色のものを身につけるんだよ、と教えられてて、一生懸命緑の服を探して、打ち合わせに行きました（笑）。って、緑の生地のひょう柄なんですけど・・・。Fredももちろん緑のネクタイ。電車の中にいる人たちも、みんな緑の首飾りや、緑のタイや、緑のシャツ。日本でもパレードなんかをやってるみたいですけど、私、知りませんでした。気を付けてみるとみんな緑色で、ちょっとおもしろかったです。

March 17th was St. Patrick’s Day. The day is a holiday for Ireland and it is a day when St Patrick passed away. Some attorney told me everybody wear something green in this day. So, I looked for a green clothes, and wore something green and went to a meeting. I don’t have a green wear except a green blouse having leopard-print pattern…Of course, Fred wore a green tie. Everybody in the train wore a green necklace, a green tie or green shirt. I saw it on the internet a parade was held on that day in Japan, but I didn’t know about St. Patrick’s Day. When I watched people carefully, I found that the most of people wore something green, ans it was very interesting.

Korea

文化の違いといったら、もう一つ。韓国って、みんなで一つの鍋を、自分の箸やスプーンで突っつき合うってイメージですよね。何度か韓国に行きましたけど、やっぱそうでした。日本だと、とり箸とか使いますよね、初対面だったりすると。でも韓国人は抵抗ないのね、文化の違いよね、などと思ってましたけど、ある韓国人の人が、知らない人と同じ鍋を突っつき合うのはちょっと抵抗あるのよね、って言ってました（笑）。やっぱいやな人もいるんだー、みたいな。

One more culture gap. In Korea, my image is that everyone eats from one Nabe by using ones own chopsticks or spoon. I have been to Korea several times, and my image was almost correct. But we use Tori-bashi which is a separate pair of chopsticks to take the food from one plate to another, especially when it is the first time to meet. However, I thought Korean people are open to use own chopsticks when they eat same Nabe, it was a culture gap. Then some Korean told to me she doesn’t like to use own chopsticks or own spoon when she eats same dish with other people. It was very interesting that even Korean people sometimes don’t like using their own spoon when they eat one dish with other people.

Sneaker

テレビや映画なんかでは、アメリカ人のウォーキングウーマンは、びしっとスーツを着てるんだけど、通勤時は、スニーカを履いてて、出勤するとハイヒールに履き替えるってイメージがありました。ＮＹなんかはそんな感じだけど、Sughrueではあんまりそんな感じがしない、っていうか、みんなスーツ着てないし・・・。でも、こないだ男のアトーニと話をしてたら、女性が出勤時にスニーカを履いてるのが俺には理解できない、って言ってました（笑）。日本では、なかなかスーツにスニーカは履かないので、私も同意ですけど、やっぱみんなおかしいと思ってるんだーと思ったらちょっとおかしかったです。文化の違いかしら、と思ってたけど、やっぱみんなおかしいと思ってるのね。

In TV or movies, working women in America wear a suit smartly, but they are wearing sneakers between their home and their office, and change the sneakers into heels in their office. I think my image is almost correct in NY, but is not correct in Sughrue, they hardly wear suits. However, last time, I talked with some attorney, he said he couldn’t understand why women wear sneakers with suit in the train. I agree because women in Japan never wear sneakers with suits. It was very interesting that some American think it is strange. I thought it was a culture gap, but, even American people sometimes think it is strange…

Praia do Lebion

ＤＣ行きの飛行機は、夜の１０時半だったので、午後はビーチで過ごしました。海に入って波にもまれ、疲れてはチェアに座ってビールを飲み、eye candyを楽しむ（笑）。時間は矢のように過ぎて言ったけれど、リオ旅行はとてもとても楽しい旅行でした。名古屋からとてもとても遠いけれど母親や父親を是非リオに連れてきたいと思いました。ブラジルは日本とちょうど地球の裏側にあて、入国するにはビザが必要で、いろんな意味で遠い国だなと思っていました。でも、今回の旅行でたくさんのブラジル人に出会い、ブラジル人の優しさに触れ、ブラジルは遠くないって思えました。たくさんの人が機会を作って、ブラジルに、リオに行くことを、強く強くお勧めします。

As our airplane was 10:30pm, we spent time on the beach in the afternoon. I enjoyed the sea, I drank beer with sitting on a chair when I felt tired, and I enjoyed eye candy^^. Although time just flew by, the Rio trip was really fun. I want to take my parents to Rio, although Rio is very far from Nagoya. I thought Brazil was a faraway country in a lot of ways, because Brazil was located other side of the world from Japan and we need visa if we go to Brazil. However I could think Brazil was not a faraway country, as I met many Brazilian people, and felt the kindness of Brazilian. I strongly recommend and I hope many Japanese make a time and go to Brazil and Rio.

Last day

さて、最終日は念願のハンググライダーをやりに行きました。快晴。ものすごいたくさんのハンググライダが飛んでいます。私と一緒に飛んでくれたドライバーはハンググライダー２７年、１日に６回のダイブをこなすという超ベテラン。飛び立つ崖の上までは、車で行きます。崖の上から見下ろすリオは超絶景。だけども怖い。５ｍくらいの傾斜をドライバと並列に並んで駆け下りて飛び降り、数分の飛行の後、海岸の砂浜に降り立ちます。ドライバのRoniが恐怖は一瞬で喜びに変わるから大丈夫だよ、と言っていましたがその通り。最初は足がすくみそうだったけど、飛び立った後は、それはそれは素晴らしい眺めでした。何度でも飛びたい感じ。飛行中の写真をみんなに見せられないのがとても残念。Glauceeが、今度きたらスカイダイビングしてみなさいって言ってましたけど、挑戦しちゃおうかな・・。

Well, finally we did hang gliding on the last day of our trip. It was very fine. There were a lot of hang gliders in the air. The driver who flew with me has 27 years carries and he does six flies every day. He is a super-veteran. We went to the cliff where we fly by his car. The view from the top of the cliff was really nice, but I felt very scary. We dashed down the cliff and got down on the beach after several minutes flying. Roni who was one of drivers told us the fear would be changed with pleasure in an eye’s blink and it was true. Before flying, I felt weak at the knees, but I could see the amazing view during flying. I wanted to fly many times. I am very sorry that I cannot show you the view during my flying. Glaucee recommended us to skydive, if I come to Rio next time. I am not comfortable with high place, but I want to try!

Market

さて、Grande島から帰ったのが夜の１０時過ぎだったんですけど、Glauceeがマーケットに連れて行ってくれました。小さい露天のお店が１００軒くらい並んでいるマーケットです。リオには、たくさんのスラムがあります。中には、世界一という大きなスラムもあり、危ないので私たちは行くことはできませんでした。露天のお店は、スラムに住む人達がやっているようで、多くのお店がハンドメイドのネックレス、イヤリング、お着物、絵なんかを売っています。どれもとても美しく、値段も高くありませんし、値切りＯＫです。ブラジルは、コーヒー、チョコ、オレンジなどのフルーツの他に、宝石で有名です。世界中の宝石のほとんどがブラジルで産出されています。さまざまな宝石は、値段も様々でしたけれど、女の子ならみんな目が釘付けって感じでとても楽しいショッピングでした。

Although we arrived at the hotel after 10:00pm from Grande island, Glaucee took us to the market. There were about 100 stall at the market. There are a lot of shanty towns in Rio. One of them is the most largest one in the world, but we could not go there because it was not safe. The people at the shanty town sell many things such as hand-made necklaces, earrings, ornaments and pictures. They were all beautiful and reasonable, and we could discount them. Brazil is well known for stone as well as coffee, chocolate and oranges. Most of stone are yielded in Brazil. Many kinds of stones were various prices. If you are a girl, you must be interested in them, so I enjoyed shopping at the market.

Ilha Grande

朝６時にGlauceeがホテルに迎えに来ることになってたんですけど、なんと朝６時のGlauceeの電話で起きてしまいました（苦笑）。おかげで、島に行くフェリーに乗り遅れて、小さい船で向かいました。島に着くと、また違うボートに乗り換え、シュノーケリングスポットに。私はなんと十数年ぶりにシュノーケリングをしたのでした（笑）。海には、お魚がいっぱい。前日雨が降ったとかで、若干海が濁ってましたけど、本当にたくさんのお魚を見ることができました。そういえば、島で、ブラジルで２番目に高いというヤシの木を見ました。さすがにすごい高さだった。シーフードランチを食べてお土産なんかをちょっと見て、なんてしてたら、帰りもフェリーに乗り遅れ（笑）。ホテルに着いたのは夜の１０時くらいでしたけど、楽しい旅行でした。
Glaucee was going to pick us up at 6:00 am at the hotel, but we got up with her phone...
Because of that, we missed the ferry which took us to the island, then we went to the island by a small ship. After we arrived at the island, we changed the boat, then we went to the spot where we did snorkel. I did snorkel for the first time in decades. There were many fishes in the sea. I could see many fish although the sea was a little thick because the previous day was raining.
BTW, I saw the coconut palm which was the second highest in the world. It was
really high.. Then, we missed the ferry again because we went to a souvenir shop after eating seafood...
We arrived at our hotel around 10:00pm, but the trip was really fun.

Ilha de Paqueta

ガイドブックなんかを見ると、パケタ島というのがあって、リオから船で１時間くらいで行けるらしい。私たちも行ってみたいと、Glauceeに相談すると、Glauceeが幼い頃はそれはきれいな島だったそうですが、今は環境汚染がすすんでしまって、残念ながら進めできない。行くなら、Ilha Grandeがよい、ということで、ツアーを組んでもらいました。ツアーの内容は下記でR$500。

My guide book says there is Ilha de Paqueta, and we can go there about one hour by ship. Then we consulted Glausee about going there. She said Ilha de Paqueta was beautiful island, but unfortunately she could not recommend to go to there because of pollution. If we were to go somewhere, she recommended Ilha Grande, and she proposed the following tour. It costs R$500.

Beach

ハンググライダがダメになったので、ビーチに連れていってもらいました。私はこの日、リオ旅行で初めて海に入りました。初めての大西洋♪　一番驚いたのは、その波の強さ。ものすごい勢いなんです。腰くらいまで浸かってるだけで、波に足を取られます。波も高い。サーファーにはとってもよい環境かも。リオ滞在中、毎日３５度くらいだったので、海はとっても気持ちがよかったです。ハワイなんかと比べると若干濁ってる感じもしますが、海はとてもきれい。ビーチでのんびり過ごすだけで、リオに来る価値ありです。パラソルやチェアは、１つ１５０円くらいでレンタルできます。私たちは、ブラジル人のきれいなおねちゃんやお兄さんの抜群のスタイルをにやにや眺めて過ごしました（笑）。どころで、目の保養のことを、eye candyというんだそうです。ビーチには、eye candyがいっぱい!!!

She took us to the beach because we couldn’t do a hang-gliding. It was the first time during the Rio trip that I entered the sea. It was the first time for me to enter the Atlantic ocean! To my surprise, the wave was really strong. It was really forceful. If I soaked until my waist, I was swept out to the waves. TThe waves were very high. and I thought it was very good environment for surfers. It was 35C every day during our stay in Rio, I feel very comfortable in the sea. The sea was a little thicker than Hawaii, I felt, but it was still very clear. It is worth coming to Rio only spending much time on the beach. We could rent a parasol and chair with about 150 yen. We spent time on the beach with watching the distinguished style of Brazilian people. By the way, Brazilian speak of “Me no Hoyou” as eye candy. There are many eye candies on the beach in Rio!!!
